If your website was built in the last 10 years, you’ve probably heard the term “WordPress”. There are a lot myths out there and we’re going to expose the biggest ones associated the popular content management system (CMS for short).

#1: All WordPress Websites Are Built Using Templates

This is by far the biggest myth we come up against. Templates and themes have become a massive part of the WordPress ecosystem however, those types of tools are only the beginning of WordPress’ capabilities. At it’s core, WordPress is a way to organize website content. To that end it can facilitate everything from simple blog sites to a complex e-commerce transactions.

#2: WordPress Websites Are Not Secure

Most of the time we see sites get hacked that are not being managed properly. Plugins, themes, and even WordPress itself need to be updated regularly and monitored for suspicious behavior.

While there a lot of security plugins out there, nothing can replace a hands-on developer to make sure everything is safe and sound.

#3: All WordPress Sites Are Created Equal

As we mentioned earlier, WordPress is just a way to organize content. How it gets used is entirely based on the needs of your website and the experience of your web developer. Does your site need advanced search capabilities? Are you selling products or services directly from your site? Are you collecting sensitive or personal information from users?

Saying that all WordPress websites are the same is like saying that all houses are the same because they have wood frames.

#4: WordPress Websites Are Cheap To Make

As a custom design and development company, we hear these words often: “I know someone who can build a WordPress website for a few hundred bucks.”
So what’s the difference between a $500 website and a $5K website? It’s the same thing that separates a Ford Fiesta from a Lexus LC. Design, quality of build, features, attention to detail, and functionality.

Just like anything else, quality takes time and experience. Yes it will cost you more now – but in the end you’ll have a better product that will last much longer.

#5: WordPress Is Only For Blogging Websites

It’s absolutely true that WordPress was created as a blogging platform. However, it has morphed into a content management system (CMS) that now powers over 25% of the internet.

The days of Xanga are long gone, so there’s no way 25% of the web is made up of blogs. And it’s not. WordPress is a powerful platform that even the world’s largest corporations use. We’ll talk more about this in Myth #7.

#6: Having A WordPress Website Hurts SEO

SEO is mostly based on the quality of your content, how responsive (mobile friendly) your site is, and the speed at which it loads. WordPress has no effect on a website’s ranking. None.

The proof? As we talk about in the next myth, some of the world’s largest companies have WordPress websites. There is no way any of those companies would sacrifice a single position in Google ranking by having a WordPress site.

#7: WordPress Is Only Good For Small Websites

Time, CNN, TechCrunch, Harvard Law School, Mozilla Firefox, eBay, SONY and Microsoft all boast websites built of WordPress. We could pretty much stop there – but we won’t!
